Chapter 34: Rāvaṇa’s Conversation With Śūrpaṇakhā
Text 3.34.21

तां तु दृष्ट्वाद्य वैदेहीं पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम्।
मन्मथस्य शराणां वै त्वं विधेयो भविष्यसि॥

tāṁ tu dṛṣṭvādya vaidehīṁ pūrṇa-candra-nibhānanām
manmathasya śarāṇāṁ vai tvaṁ vidheyo bhaviṣyasi

tām tu = that; dṛṣṭvā = if you see; adya = today; vaidehīm = princess of Vaidehī; pūrṇa-candra-nibha-ānanām = whose face resembles the full moon; manmathasya = of Kāmadeva; śarāṇām = of the arrows; vai = certainly; tvam = you; vidheyaḥ = an object; bhaviṣyasi = will become.

Today if you see that princess of Vaidehī whose face resembles the full moon, you will certainly become an object of the arrows of Kāmadeva.

GLOSS. Vidheyaḥ (“an object”) means “[come] under the influence of.”

NOTE. Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura notes in his commentary to Caitanya-bhāgavata (Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.273) that the five arrows of Kāmadeva are illusion, intoxication, evaporation, affliction and detention. He also quotes another description of these five arrows as under:

dravaṇaṁ śoṣaṇaṁ bāṇaṁ tāpanaṁ mohanābhidham
unmādanaṁ ca kāmasya bānāḥ pañca prakīrtitāḥ

“The five arrows [of Kāmadeva] are liquefaction, evaporation, affliction, bewilderment and intoxication.”1
