Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 39: Mārīca Describes his Second Encounter with Lord Rāma
Text 3.39.17

राममेव हि पश्यामि रहिते राक्षसाधिप।
दृष्ट्वा स्वप्नगतं राममुद्भ्रमामि विचेतनः॥

rāmam eva hi paśyāmi rahite rākṣasādhipa
dṛṣṭvā svapna-gataṁ rāmam udbhramāmi vicetanaḥ

rāmam = Rāma; eva hi = certainly; paśyāmi = I see; rahite = in His absence; rākṣasa-adhipa = O ruler of the rākṣasas; dṛṣṭvā  = upon seeing; svapna-gatam = in my dreams; rāmam = Rāma; udbhramāmi = prattle by mistake; vicetanaḥ = I senselessly.

I certainly see Rāma in His absence, O ruler of the rākṣasas! Upon seeing Rāma in my dreams, I senselessly prattle by mistake.1

In the second half of this verse, he states that [Lord Rāma] is not only manifest to him during his wakeful state [of consciousness. Mārīca saw Him] even in his dreaming state [of consciousness].

Mārīca didn’t become frightened [of Rāma] just by seeing [something that could be related to Him]. He became frightened [of Him] even when he heard [something that could be related to Him]. With this in mind, he speaks the next verse.

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: udbhramāmi bhrāntaṁ pralāpaṁ karomīty arthaḥ.
