Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 40: Rāvaṇa Criticizes Mārīca
Text 3.40.26

न चेत्करोषि मारीच हन्मि त्वामहमद्य वै।
एतत्कार्यमवश्यं मे बलादपि करिष्यसि।
राज्ञो हि प्रतिकूलस्थो न जातु सुखमेधते॥

na cet karoṣi mārīca hanmi tvām aham adya vai
etat kāryam avaśyaṁ me balād api kariṣyasi
rājño hi pratikūlastho na jātu sukham edhate

na = not; cet = if; karoṣi = you do do this; mārīca = Mārīca; hanmi = will kill; tvām = you; aham = I; adya vai = today itself; etat = this; kāryam avaśyam = to do; me = for me; balāt = by force; api = even; kariṣyasi = you will have; rājñaḥ = to a king; hi = because; pratikūlasthaḥ = one who is unfavorable; na jātu = never ever; sukham = his happiness; edhate = augments.

Mārīca, if you do not do this, I will kill you today itself. You will have to do this for me even by force because one who is unfavorable to a king never ever augments his happiness.

“Even by force” indicates that Rāvaṇa would, by all means, make Mārīca carry out this task even if he doesn’t want to [do so]. If Mārīca opposes, he will have to face trouble as stated in the last line of this verse.1

Rāvaṇa then points out Mārīca’s gain in carrying out the task at hand and his loss in not carrying it out in the next verse.2
