Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 42: Mārīca Becomes an Enchanting Deer
Text 3.42.6
एतच्छौण्डीर्ययुक्तं ते मच्छन्दादिव भाषितम्।
इदानीमसि मारीचः पूर्वमन्यो निशाचरः॥६
etac chauṇḍīrya-yuktaṁ te mac-chandād iva bhāṣitam
idānīm asi mārīcaḥ pūrvam anyo niśācaraḥ
etat = now; śauṇḍīrya-yuktam = is filled with heroism; te = you; mat-chandāt iva = as if by my wish; bhāṣitam = what have spoken; idānīm = now; asi = you are; mārīcaḥ = Mārīca; pūrvam = previously; anyaḥ = [you were] some other; niśācaraḥ = night-ranger.
What you have spoken now is filled with heroism, as if by my wish! Now you are Mārīca. Previously [you were] some other night-ranger.
Rāvaṇa intended to say, “Previously, you were like some other night-ranger because you spoke with timidity. But now, you behave like the Mārīca whose name was famous in the world [as Mārīca]! You have regained your [original] nature.”
