Chapter 42: Mārīca Becomes an Enchanting Deer
Text 3.42.17
कुन्देन्दुवज्रसंकाश मुदरं चास्य भास्वरम्।
मधूकनिभपार्श्वश्च पद्मकिञ्जल्कसन्निभः॥
kundendu-vajra-saṅkāśam udaraṁ cāsya bhāsvaram
madhūka-nibha-pārśvaś ca padma-kiñjalka-sannibhaḥ
kunda-indu-vajra-saṅkāśam = resembling the jasmine, moon and thunderbolt; udaram ca = belly; asya = its; bhāsvaram = was bright; madhūka-nibha-pārśvaḥ = a part of its hindside resembled the mahua tree in color; ca = and; padma-kiñjalka-sannibhaḥ = it resembled lotus filaments.
Its belly was bright, resembling the jasmine, moon and thunderbolt. A part of its hindside resembled the mahua tree in color and it resembled lotus filaments.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: padma-kiñjalka-sannibhaḥ uktāvayava-vyatirikta-pṛṣṭha-sarva-pradeśe padma-kesara-varṇaḥ
[Only] a part of its hindside resembled the mahua tree in color, for it will be stated [in text 3.43.1] that the rest had the complexion of gold.
“It resembled lotus filaments” means “The other parts of its hindside had the complexion of lotus filaments.”1
