मनोहरं दर्शनीयं रूपं कृत्वा स राक्षसः।
प्रलोभनार्थं वैदेह्या नानाधातुविचित्रितम्।
विचरन्गच्छते तस्माच्छाद्वलानि समन्ततः॥
manoharaṁ darśanīyaṁ rūpaṁ kṛtvā sa rākṣasaḥ
pralobhanārthaṁ vaidehyā nānā-dhātu-vicitritam
vicaran gacchate tasmāc chādvalāni samantataḥ
manoharam = a charming; darśanīyam = and attractive; rūpam = form; kṛtvā = having assumed; saḥ = the; rākṣasaḥ = rākṣasa; pralobhana-artham = to allure; vaidehyāḥ = Vaidehī; nānā-dhātu-vicitritam = of several interesting colors; vicaran = while eating; gacchate = departed; tasmāt = from there; śādvalāni = the fresh grass; samantataḥ = around him.
Having assumed a charming and attractive form of several interesting colors to allure Vaidehī, the rākṣasa departed from there while eating the fresh grass around him.1
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: vicaran bhakṣayan. cara gati-bhakṣaṇayoḥ. Apart from this, vicaran would need to have a meaning other than “while going [about]” since gacchate (“[it] goes”) also occurs in the vākya.
