विक्रीडंश्च क्वचिद्भूमौ पुनरेव निषीदति।
आश्रमद्वारमागम्य मृगयूथानि गच्छति।
मृगयूथैरनुगतः पुनरेव निवर्तते॥
vikrīḍaṁś ca kvacid bhūmau punar eva niṣīdati
āśrama-dvāram āgamya mṛga-yūthāni gacchati
mṛga-yūthair anugataḥ punar eva nivartate
vikrīḍan ca = while sporting [thus] by moving back and forth; kvacit = sometimes; bhūmau = on the ground; punaḥ eva niṣīdati = it sat; āśrama-dvāram = the gateway to the āśrama; āgamya = reaching; mṛga-yūthāni = herds of deer; gacchati = it followed; mṛga-yūthaiḥ = by herds of deer; anugataḥ = [sometimes] it was followed; punaḥ eva nivartate = [and sometimes] it came back [to its earlier place].
While sporting [thus] by moving back and forth, it sometimes sat on the ground.1 Reaching the gateway to the āśrama, it followed herds of deer. [Sometimes] it was followed by herds of deer [and sometimes] it came back [to its earlier place].
1 Literally and in line with the commentary, “While sporting [thus] by coming and going, it sometimes sat on the ground again and again.” The idea is that the deer went and came back repeatedly and when it came back, it would sit on the ground.
