Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 43: Sītā Sees the Magical Deer
Text 3.43.9

एवं ब्रुवाणं काकुत्स्थं प्रतिवार्य शुचिस्मिता।
उवाच सीता संहृष्टा चर्मणा हृतचेतना॥

evaṁ bruvāṇaṁ kākutsthaṁ prativārya śuci-smitā
uvāca sītā saṁhṛṣṭā carmaṇā hṛta-cetanā

evam = thus; bruvāṇam = who spoke; kākutstham = Lakṣmaṇa; prativārya = stopping; śuci-smitā = with a sweet smile; uvāca = spoke [as follows]; sītā = Sītā-devī; saṁhṛṣṭā = [for] she was delighted; carmaṇā = by the skin [of the deer]; hṛta-cetanā = and her intelligence stolen.

Stopping Lakṣmaṇa who spoke thus, Sītā-devī spoke [as follows] with a sweet smile [for] she was delighted, and her intelligence stolen, by the skin [of the deer].

GLOSS. [The glossator reads chadmanā instead of carmaṇā, indicating that] though Sītā-devī knew that this was a magician [in the form of a deer], she appeared to have become bewildered due to [Mārīca’s] deception.
