Chapter 43: Sītā Sees the Magical Deer
Text 3.43.14
नानावर्णविचित्राङ्गो रत्नबिन्दुसमाचितः।
द्योतयन्वनमव्यग्रं शोभते शशिसन्निभः॥
nānā-varṇa-vicitrāṅgo ratna-bindu-samācitaḥ
dyotayan vanam avyagraṁ śobhate śaśi-sannibhaḥ
nānā-varṇa-vicitra-aṅgaḥ = with various colors, its body is wonderful; ratna-bindu-samācitaḥ = its body is covered with jewel-like spots; dyotayan = illuminating; vanam = forest; avyagram = the entire; śobhate = it shines; śaśi-sannibhaḥ = like the moon.
With various colors, its body is wonderful! Its body is covered with jewel-like spots. Illuminating the entire forest, it shines like the moon.
“[It shines] like the moon” indicates that the deer was a bestower of delight, like the moon.
