Chapter 43: Sītā Sees the Magical Deer
Text 3.43.42
समुत्थाने च तद्रूपं कर्तुकामं समीक्ष्य तम्।
उत्स्मयित्वा तु भगवान्वातापिमिदमब्रवीत्॥
samutthāne ca tad-rūpaṁ kartu-kāmaṁ samīkṣya tam
utsmayitvā tu bhagavān vātāpim idam abravīt
samutthāne ca = when got up at the end of the śrāddha [feast]; tat-rūpam = his own form of a rākṣasa; kartu-kāmam = wanted to assume; samīkṣya = he noticed that; tam = the rākṣasa; utsmayitvā tu = with a slight smile; bhagavān = the powerful sage; vātāpim = Vātāpi; idam = as follows; abravīt = the sage told.
When the powerful sage got up at the end of the śrāddha [feast], he noticed that Vātāpi wanted to assume his own form of a rākṣasa. With a slight smile, the sage told the rākṣasa as follows.
