Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 44: Śrī Rāma Kills Mārīca
Text 3.44.15
शरीरं मृगरूपस्य विनिर्भिद्य शरोत्तमः।
मारीचस्यैव हृदयं बिभेदाशनिसन्निभः॥
śarīraṁ mṛga-rūpasya vinirbhidya śarottamaḥ
mārīcasyaiva hṛdayaṁ bibhedāśani-sannibhaḥ
śarīram = the body; mṛga-rūpasya = of the deer; vinirbhidya = pierced through; śara-uttamaḥ = that excellent arrow; mārīcasya = of Mārīca; eva = himself; hṛdayam = the heart; bibheda = and shattered; aśani-sannibhaḥ = which appeared like the thunderbolt.
That excellent arrow, which appeared like the thunderbolt, pierced through the body of the deer and shattered the heart of Mārīca himself.1
1 Technical note: mṛga-rūpasya literally means “of the form of the deer.”
At first it pierced through the body of the deer. Then it shattered Mārīca’s heart, that is, Mārīca’s own body inside the body of the deer.
