Chapter 45: Sītā Chastises Lakṣmaṇa
Text 3.45.18
कृतवैराश्च वैदेहि वयमेतैर्निशाचरैः।
खरस्य निधनादेव जनस्थानवधं प्रति॥
kṛta-vairāś ca vaidehi vayam etair niśācaraiḥ
kharasya nidhanād eva janasthāna-vadhaṁ prati
kṛta-vairāḥ ca = have become inimical; vaidehi = Vaidehī; vayam = to us; etaiḥ = these; niśācaraiḥ = night-rangers; kharasya = of their master Khara; nidhanāt eva = due to the death; janasthāna-vadham prati = because of the slaughter in Janasthāna.
Vaidehī, these night-rangers have become inimical to us because of the slaughter in Janasthāna due to the death of their master Khara.
“These night-rangers have become inimical to us” means “These night-rangers have quarreled with us.”
Anticipating Sītā-devī’s question, “So what?” Lakṣmaṇa speaks the next verse.
