Chapter 45: Sītā Chastises Lakṣmaṇa
Text 3.45.23
नैतच्चित्रं सपत्नेषु पापं लक्ष्मण यद्भवेत्।
त्वद्विधेषु नृशंसेषु नित्यं प्रच्छन्नचारिषु॥
naitac citraṁ sapatneṣu pāpaṁ lakṣmaṇa yad bhavet
tvad-vidheṣu nṛśaṁseṣu nityaṁ pracchanna-cāriṣu
na = not; etat = it is; citram = astonishing; sapatneṣu = and hostile persons; pāpam = evil; lakṣmaṇa = Lakṣmaṇa; yat = that; bhavet = there is; tvat-vidheṣu = like You; nṛśaṁseṣu = in cruel; nityam = always; pracchanna-cāriṣu = who are [actually] spies in disguise.
Lakṣmaṇa, it is not astonishing that there is always evil in cruel and hostile persons like You, who are [actually] spies in disguise.
Sītā-devī now alleges that there is always evil in Lakṣmaṇa because of His cruel nature as a spy in disguise.
