Chapter 46: Rāvaṇa Disguises Himself and Approaches Sītā
Text 3.46.27
का त्वं भवसि रुद्राणां मरुतां वा वरानने।
वसूनां वा वरारोहे देवता प्रतिभासि मे॥
kā tvaṁ bhavasi rudrāṇāṁ marutāṁ vā varānane
vasūnāṁ vā varārohe devatā pratibhāsi me
kā = who; tvam = you; bhavasi = are; rudrāṇām = [are you related] to the rudras; marutām vā = maruts; vara-ānane = with a beautiful face; vasūnām vā = or vasus; vara-ārohe = O beautiful lady; devatā = to be a celestial female; pratibhāsi me = you appear to me.
You appear to me to be a celestial female. O beautiful lady with a beautiful face, who are you? [Are you related] to the rudras, maruts or vasus?
Vā indicates that Rāvaṇa also intended to ask her, “Are you related to the ādityas?”
He [himself] removes that doubt in the next verse.
