Chapter 47: Rāvaṇa Reveals his Identity to Sītā
Text 3.47.15
त्वया हि खलु वस्तव्यं नव वर्षाणि पञ्च च।
वने प्रव्रज काकुत्स्थ पितरं मोचयानृतात्॥
tvayā hi khalu vastavyaṁ nava varṣāṇi pañca ca
vane pravraja kākutstha pitaraṁ mocayānṛtāt
tvayā hi khalu = therefore, You; vastavyam = should live; nava = for nine; varṣāṇi = years; pañca = five; ca = and; vane = in the forest; pravraja = depart; kākutstha = Kākutstha; pitaram = Your father; mocaya = [and] free; anṛtāt = from falsehood.
Therefore, You should live in the forest for nine and five years. Kākutstha, depart [and] free Your father from falsehood.
“Free Your father from falsehood” means “Free Your father from breaking his promise [to me].”
