Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 48: Sītā-devī Condemns Rāvaṇa
Text 3.48.18

प्रत्याख्याय हि मां भीरु परितापं गमिष्यसि।
चरणेनाभिहत्येव पुरूरवसमूर्वशी॥

pratyākhyāya hi māṁ bhīru paritāpaṁ gamiṣyasi
caraṇenābhihatyeva purūravasam ūrvaśī

pratyākhyāya hi = after refusing; mām = me; bhīru = O timid woman; paritāpam gamiṣyasi = you will repent; caraṇena = with her foot; abhihatyā = after kicking him; iva = like; purūravasam = [who refused] King Purūravā; ūrvaśī = Ūrvaśī.

O timid woman, you will repent after refusing me like Ūrvaśī [who refused] King Purūravā after kicking him with her foot.1

“Timid woman” suggests that Rāvaṇa wants to convey, “My mind thinks that the root cause of your rejection [of my proposal] is your fear of Rāma.”

As noted in the Purāṇas, Ūrvaśī first rejected Purūravā who had requested her [to accept him] and then repented and returned to him.

1 Ūrvaśī’s very name indicates that she was extremely attractive in appearance. Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: ūrvaśīva. ūrūn mahato vaśī-karotīty ūrvaśī. vaśa kāntau. pṛṣodarāditvād u-kāra-lopaḥ. gaurāditvāt ṅīṣ. evaṁ hrasvādis tālavyāntaś ca. tathā ca māgha-yamakaṁ—“dadhaty uroja-dvayam urvaśītalaṁ bhuvo gateva svayam ūrvaśī talam” iti.
