Chapter 49: Rāvaṇa Kidnaps Sītā
Text 3.49.4
अर्कं रुन्ध्यां शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्विभिन्द्यां हि महीतलम्।
कामरूपिणमुन्मत्ते पश्य मां कामदं पतिम्॥
arkaṁ rundhyāṁ śarais tīkṣṇair vibhindyāṁ hi mahī-talam
kāma-rūpiṇam unmatte paśya māṁ kāmadaṁ patim
arkam = the sun; rundhyām = I can restrain; śaraiḥ = arrows; tīkṣṇaiḥ = with my sharp; vibhindyām hi = and shatter; mahī-talam = the earth; kāma-rūpiṇam = who can assume any form; unmatte = mad woman; paśya = look; mām = at me; kāmadam = and can grant any desire; patim = a master.
I can restrain the sun and shatter the earth with my sharp arrows. Mad woman, look at me, a master who can assume any form and can grant any desire.
In text 1, it was mentioned that Rāvaṇa had assumed a very large form. The second half of this verse refers to that.
Rāvaṇa then assumed a form with which he could kidnap Sītā. This is described in the next verse.
GLOSS. [The glossator reads tudyāṁ instead of rundhyām, indicating that] Rāvaṇa could torment the sun.
