Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 49: Rāvaṇa Kidnaps Sītā
Text 3.49.5
एवमुक्तवतस्तस्य सूर्यकल्पे शिखिप्रभे।
क्रुद्धस्य हरिपर्यन्ते रक्ते नेत्रे बभूवतुः॥
evam uktavatas tasya sūrya-kalpe śikhi-prabhe
kruddhasya hari-paryante rakte netre babhūvatuḥ
evam = thus; uktavataḥ = spoke; tasya = while he; sūrya-kalpe = they looked like the sun; śikhi-prabhe = and blazed like fire; kruddhasya = angrily; hari-paryante = they were reddish-brown at the edges 1; rakte = red; netre = his eyes; babhūvatuḥ = turned.
While he angrily spoke thus, his eyes turned red. They looked like the sun and blazed like fire. They were reddish-brown at the edges.
The two comparisons in “They looked like the sun and blazed like fire” indicate that [Rāvaṇa’s eyes] were bright and hot.
