Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 49: Rāvaṇa Kidnaps Sītā
Text 3.49.6

सद्यः सौम्यं परित्यज्य भिक्षुरूपं स रावणः।
स्वंरूपं कालरूपाभं भेजे वैश्रवणानुजः॥

sadyaḥ saumyaṁ parityajya bhikṣu-rūpaṁ sa rāvaṇaḥ
svaṁ rūpaṁ kāla-rūpābhaṁ bheje vaiśravaṇānujaḥ

sadyaḥ = in an instant; saumyam = the pleasant; parityajya = abandoned; bhikṣu-rūpam = form of a sannyāsī; saḥ = the; rāvaṇaḥ = Rāvaṇa; svam = his original; rūpam = form; kāla-rūpa-ābham = that resembled the body of Yamarāja; bheje = and assumed; vaiśravaṇa-anujaḥ = younger brother of Vaiśravaṇa.

In an instant Rāvaṇa, the younger brother of Vaiśravaṇa, abandoned the pleasant form of a sannyāsī and assumed his original form that resembled the body of Yamarāja.

Svam (“his original”) indicates that Rāvaṇa’s form was uncommon.1

“The younger brother of Vaiśravaṇa” indicates that though [Rāvaṇa and Vaiśravaṇa] were equal in terms of their birth, unfortunately Rāvaṇa, unlike Vaiśravaṇa, was cruel.

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: svaṁ svāsādhāraṇam.
