Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 49: Rāvaṇa Kidnaps Sītā
Text 3.49.19

स च मायामयो दिव्यः खरयुक्तः खरस्वनः।
प्रत्यदृश्यत हेमाङ्गो रावणस्य महारथः॥

sa ca māyāmayo divyaḥ khara-yuktaḥ khara-svanaḥ
pratyadṛśyata hemāṅgo rāvaṇasya mahā-rathaḥ

saḥ ca = the; māyāmayaḥ = it was magical; divyaḥ = celestial; khara-yuktaḥ = it was yoked to mules; khara-svanaḥ = and produced harsh sounds; pratyadṛśyata = became visible; hema-aṅgaḥ = with golden wheels; rāvaṇasya = of Rāvaṇa; mahā-rathaḥ = great chariot.

The great celestial chariot of Rāvaṇa became visible. It was magical, with golden wheels.1 It was yoked to mules and produced harsh sounds.

The chariot was previously hidden [from vision]. It was magical, that is, it was full of wonders—such as the ability to disappear [from sight] and so on.

GLOSS. Divyaḥ (“celestial”) indicates that the chariot flew in the sky.

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: hemāṅgaḥ svarṇamaya-cakraḥ. cakraṁ hi rathāṅgam ity ucyate.
