ततस्तु सा चारुदती शुचिस्मिता विनाकृता बन्धुजनेन मैथिली।
अपश्यती राघवलक्ष्मणावुभौ विवर्णवक्त्रा भयभारपीडिता॥
tatas tu sā cāru-datī śuci-smitā
vinā-kṛtā bandhu-janena maithilī
apaśyatī rāghava-lakṣmaṇāv ubhau
vivarṇa-vaktrā bhaya-bhāra-pīḍitā
tataḥ tu = after she was kidnapped; sā cāru-datī = with her lovely teeth; śuci-smitā = previously used to smile brightly; vinā-kṛtā = she was separated; bandhu-janena = from her relatives; maithilī = Maithilī; apaśyatī = and she could [no longer] see; rāghava-lakṣmaṇau ubhau = Rāghava and Lakṣmaṇa; vivarṇa-vaktrā = her face became pale; bhaya-bhāra-pīḍitā = and she was troubled by intense fear.
Previously Maithilī used to smile brightly with her lovely teeth. After she was kidnapped, she was separated from her relatives and she could [no longer] see Rāghava and Lakṣmaṇa.1 Her face became pale and she was troubled by intense fear.

Śuci-smitā also indicates that Mother Sītā was naturally possessed of a smiling [face].
