Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 53: Sītā Chastises Rāvaṇa
Text 3.53.3

न व्यपत्रपसे नीच कर्मणानेन रावण।
ज्ञात्वा विरहितां यन्मां चोरयित्वा पलायसे॥

na vyapatrapase nīca karmaṇānena rāvaṇa
jñātvā virahitāṁ yo māṁ corayitvā palāyase

na = not; vyapatrapase = are you ashamed; nīca = low-class; karmaṇā = act; anena = of this; rāvaṇa = Rāvaṇa; jñātvā = you knew; virahitām = that I was alone; yaḥ = and then you; mām = me; corayitvā = stole; palāyase = and [now] you are running away.

Low-class Rāvaṇa, you knew that I was alone and then you stole me, and [now] you are running away! Are you not ashamed of this act?

“You knew that I was alone” means “You knew that I was without [the protection of] Śrī Rāma and Śrī Lakṣmaṇa.”

GLOSS. Nīca can be read as an adjective [and so the verse will mean, “Rāvaṇa, you knew that I was alone and then you stole me, and [now] you are running away! Are you not ashamed of this low-class act?”]1

1 Technical note: Nīca can be read as an adjective of karmaṇā when they are combined into a tatpuruṣa-compound nīca-karmaṇā.
