Chapter 55: Rāvaṇa Flatters Sītā
Text 3.55.34
ध्यायन्तीं तामिवास्वस्थां दीनां चिन्ताहतप्रभाम्।
उवाच वचनं पापो रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः॥
dhyāyantīṁ tām ivāsvasthāṁ dīnāṁ cintā-hata-prabhām
uvāca vacanaṁ pāpo rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ
dhyāyantīm = she was meditating [on Lord Rāma]; tām = to her; iva = she seemed; asvasthām = to be ill; dīnām = and miserable; cintā-hata-prabhām = her splendor was destroyed by her anxiety; uvāca = spoke; vacanam = [the following] words; pāpaḥ = the sinful; rāvaṇaḥ = Rāvaṇa; rākṣasa-īśvaraḥ = lord of the rākṣasas.
She was meditating [on Lord Rāma]. She seemed to be ill and miserable. Her splendor was destroyed by her anxiety. Rāvaṇa, the sinful lord of the rākṣasas, spoke [the following] words to her.
