Chapter 59: Rāma Chastises Lakṣmaṇa
Text 3.59.2
तमुवाच किमर्थं त्वमागतोऽपास्य मैथिलीम्।
यदा सा तव विश्वासाद्वने विरहिता मया॥
tam uvāca kim-arthaṁ tvam āgato ’pāsya maithilīm
yadā sā tava viśvāsād vane virahitā mayā
tam = Him; uvāca = [Lord Rāma] told; kim-artham = why [did You do so]; tvam = You; āgataḥ = and come [to Me]; apāsya = have left; maithilīm = Maithilī; yadā = when; sā = her; tava = in You; viśvāsāt = because of My confidence; vane = in the forest; virahitā = left; mayā = I had.
[Lord Rāma] told Him: You have left Maithilī and come [to Me]. When I had left her in the forest because of My confidence in You, why [did You do so]?
[Lord Rāma] was confident that there would be no danger [to Sītā] while she was under Lakṣmaṇa’s protection.
