Chapter 59: Rāma Chastises Lakṣmaṇa
Text 3.59.13
विस्वरं व्याहृतं वाक्यं लक्ष्मण त्राहि मामिति।
न भवत्या व्यथा कार्या कुनारीजनसेविता॥
visvaraṁ vyāhṛtaṁ vākyaṁ lakṣmaṇa trāhi mām iti
na bhavatyā vyathā kāryā kunārī-jana-sevitā
visvaram = don’t fully match His voice; vyāhṛtam = that have been uttered; vākyam = the words; lakṣmaṇa = Lakṣmaṇa; trāhi = save; mām iti = Me; na = not; bhavatyā = You; vyathā = pained; kāryā = should be; kunārī-jana-sevitā = like the unintelligent class of women.
The words that have been uttered, “Lakṣmaṇa, save Me,” don’t fully match His voice. You should be not pained like the unintelligent class of women.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: visvaram iti svara-prakāra-viśeṣa-śodhane ’pi nāyaṁ rāma-svara ity arthaḥ.
Visvaram indicates that by analyzing the voice [that was heard by Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā, Lakṣmaṇa could understand that], it was not Rāma’s voice.1
