Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 59: Rāma Chastises Lakṣmaṇa
Text 3.59.15

न जय्यो राघवो युद्धे देवैः शक्रपुरोगमैः॥

na jayyo rāghavo yuddhe devaiḥ śakra-purogamaiḥ

na jayyaḥ = cannot conquer; rāghavaḥ = Rāghava; yuddhe = in battle; devaiḥ = even all the devas; śakra-purogamaiḥ = led by Indra.

Even all the devas led by Indra cannot conquer Rāghava in battle.

The previous verse stated that He cannot be conquered in a one-on-one combat. This verse states that [even if all the devas] combine together, He cannot be conquered by them.1

NOTE. Neither the devas nor the dānavas can conquer the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In fact, they can’t even know or understand His personality; so where is the question of them ever conquering Him?

Arjuna states the following in Bhagavad-gīta 10.14:

sarvam etad ṛtaṁ manye yan māṁ vadasi keśava
na hi te bhagavan vyaktiṁ vidur devā na dānavāḥ

O Kṛṣṇa, I totally accept as truth all that You have told me. Neither the demigods nor the demons, O Lord, can understand Your personality.

1 It is clear that Śrī Lakṣmaṇa had solid reasons to reject the idea that Mārīca’s voice was actually Rāma’s voice.
