Chapter 59: Rāma Chastises Lakṣmaṇa
Text 3.59.17
भावो मयि तवात्यर्थं पाप एव निवेशितः।
विनष्टे भ्रातरि प्राप्तुं न च त्वं मामवाप्स्यसि॥
bhāvo mayi tavātyarthaṁ pāpa eva niveśitaḥ
vinaṣṭe bhrātari prāptuṁ na ca tvaṁ mām avāpsyasi
bhāvaḥ = feeling; mayi = for me; tava = You; atyartham = a very; pāpaḥ eva = sinful; niveśitaḥ = have developed; vinaṣṭe = is destroyed; bhrātari = when Your brother; prāptum = to attain [me]; na = not; ca tvam = but You; mām = me; avāpsyasi = will attain.
You have developed a very sinful feeling for me, to attain [me] when Your brother is destroyed, but You will not attain me.1
1 Her idea was, “If Rāma dies, I will also die.” Therefore, she said, “But You will not attain me.”
“Sinful feeling” means “despicable feeling.”
