Chapter 59: Rāma Chastises Lakṣmaṇa
Text 3.59.18
सङ्केताद्भरतेन त्वं रामं समनुगच्छसि।
क्रोशन्तं हि यथात्यर्थं नैनमभ्यवपद्यसे॥
saṅketād bharatena tvaṁ rāmaṁ samanugacchasi
krośantaṁ hi yathātyarthaṁ nainam abhyavapadyase
saṅketāt = under an agreement; bharatena = with Bharata; tvam = You; rāmam = Rāma; samanugacchasi = have closely followed; krośantam = crying out [for help]; hi = because; yathā atyartham = when He is loudly; na = not; enam = to Him; abhyavapadyase = You do reach out.
You have closely followed Rāma under an agreement with Bharata because You do not reach out to Him when He is loudly crying out [for help].
[Sītā-devī accused Lakṣmaṇa of having worked out] an agreement with Bharata to the effect that Lakṣmaṇa should kill Rāma as soon as He gets the opportunity. According to her, this, not His devotion to Rāma, was why He closely followed Rāma
