Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 59: Rāma Chastises Lakṣmaṇa
Text 3.59.24
सर्वथा त्वपनीतं ते सीतया यत्प्रचोदितः।
क्रोधस्य वशमापन्नो नाकरोः शासनं मम॥
sarvathā tv apanītaṁ te sītayā yat pracoditaḥ
krodhasya vaśam āpanno nākaroḥ śāsanaṁ mama
sarvathā tu = in every respect; apanītam = have deviated from dharma; te = You; sītayā = when Sītā; yat = because; pracoditaḥ = instigated You; krodhasya = of anger; vaśam = under the control; āpannaḥ = You came; na = not; akaroḥ = and You did carry out; śāsanam = command; mama = My.
You have deviated from dharma in every respect because You came under the control of anger when Sītā instigated You and You did not carry out My command.
Lord Rāmacandra implies the following here. [Lakṣmaṇa] should have tolerated whatever was harshly spoken by [that] angry woman. If He couldn’t tolerate [her words], He should have left their āśrama and protected [her] while remaining unseen [by her]. His coming [to Rāma on the order of Sītā] was nothing but a deviation from dharma on the part of Lakṣmaṇa.
