Chapter 61: Rāma’s Lamentation
Text 3.61.4
वृक्षेणाच्छाद्य यदि मां सीते हसितुमिच्छसि।
अलं ते हसितेनाद्य मां भजस्व सुदुःखितम्॥
vṛkṣeṇācchādya yadi māṁ sīte hasitum icchasi
alaṁ te hasitenādya māṁ bhajasva suduḥkhitam
vṛkṣeṇa = behind a tree; ācchādya = you are hiding; yadi = if; mām = with Me; sīte = O Sītā; hasitum = to joke; icchasi = with a desire; alam = enough; te = your; hasitena = of joke; adya = now; mām = to Me; bhajasva = come; suduḥkhitam = [since] I am very distressed.
O Sītā, if you are hiding behind a tree with a desire to joke with Me, enough of your joke now! Come to Me, [since] I am very distressed.
Bhagavān Rāmacandra intended to tell Sītā-devī, “[If you are hiding behind a tree] to joke with me while thinking, ‘You can’t find me [because] I have hidden myself,’ enough of this joke at this time of sorrow!”
