Chapter 61: Rāma’s Lamentation
Text 3.61.8-9

कथं प्रतिज्ञां संश्रुत्य मया त्वमभियोजितः।
अपूरयित्वा तं कालं मत्सकाशमिहागतः॥

काम-वृत्तमनार्यं मां मृषावादिनमेव च।
धिक्त्वामिति परे लोके व्यक्तं वक्ष्यति मे पिता॥

kathaṁ pratijñāṁ saṁśrutya mayā tvam abhiyojitaḥ
apūrayitvā taṁ kālaṁ mat-sakāśam ihāgataḥ

kāma-vṛttam anāryaṁ māṁ mṛṣā-vādinam eva ca
dhik tvām iti pare loke vyaktaṁ vakṣyati me pitā

katham = why; pratijñām = [my] promise; saṁśrutya = accepted; mayā = and I; tvam = You; abhiyojitaḥ = engaged You [in fulfilling it]; apūrayitvā = without fully spending; tam = that; kālam = time [in the forest]; mat-sakāśam = to me; iha = here; āgataḥ = did you come; kāma-vṛttam = have been whimsical in conduct; anāryam = uncivilized; mām = I; mṛṣā-vādinam = a liar; eva = nothing but; ca = and; dhik = fie; tvām iti = upon You; pare loke = in Svarga; vyaktam = obviously; vakṣyati = will tell [Me]; me = My; pitā = father.

My father will obviously tell [Me] in Svarga, “You accepted [my] promise and I engaged You [in fulfilling it].1 Why did You come here to me without fully spending that time [in the forest]? Fie upon You!” I have been whimsical in conduct, uncivilized and nothing but a liar!

[King Daśaratha’s] promise was that [Lord Rāma] would reside in the forest for fourteen years.

[In this verse, Śrī Rāma] considers that He was whimsical in conduct and therefore certainly fit to be criticized.

NOTE. Even though the Supreme Personality of Godhead Rāmacandra presents Himself in this manner to teach us that we should always tolerate all sorts of difficulties while carrying out dharma, the actual fact has been described by Śrī Hanumān in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.19.3 thus:

oṁ namo bhagavate uttamaślokāya nama ārya-lakṣaṇa-śīla-vratāya nama upaśikṣitātmana upāsita-lokāya namaḥ sādhu-vāda-nikaṣaṇāya namo brahmaṇya-devāya mahā-puruṣāya mahā-rājāya nama iti

“Let me please Your Lordship by chanting the bīja-mantra oṁkāra. I wish to offer my respectful obeisances unto the Personality of Godhead, who is the best among the most highly elevated personalities. Your Lordship is the reservoir of all the good qualities of Āryans, people who are advanced. Your character and behavior are always consistent, and You always control Your senses and mind. Acting just like an ordinary human being, You exhibit exemplary character to teach others how to behave. There is a touchstone that can be used to examine the quality of gold, but You are like a touchstone that can verify all good qualities. You are worshiped by brāhmaṇas who are the foremost of all devotees. You, the Supreme Person, are the king of kings, and therefore I offer my respectful obeisances unto You.”

1 “You accepted my promise” means “You agreed to fulfill my promise.”
