Chapter 61: Rāma’s Lamentation
Text 3.61.17
वित्रासयितुकामा वा लीना स्यात्कानने क्वचित्।
जिज्ञासमाना वैदेहीं त्वां मां च पुरुषर्षभ॥
vitrāsayitu-kāmā vā līnā syāt kānane kvacit
jijñāsamānā vaidehīṁ tvāṁ māṁ ca puruṣa-rṣabha
vitrāsayitu-kāmā = just to frighten [Us]; vā = perhaps; līnā syāt = she has hidden herself; kānane = in the forest; kvacit = somewhere; jijñāsamānā = [and] to find out if [capable of finding]; vaidehīm = Vaidehī; tvām = You; mām = I [are]; ca = and; puruṣa-ṛṣabha = O Prince.
O Prince, perhaps she has hidden herself somewhere in the forest just to frighten [Us and] to find out if You and I are capable of finding Vaidehī.
In the previous verse, Lakṣmaṇa suspected that Sītā-devī might have hidden herself for fun. In this verse, [He considers that she might have hidden herself] to frighten [Rāmacandra and Lakṣmaṇa]. This is the distinction.
