Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 62: Rāma’s Mental Confusion
Text 3.62.7

विशेषेणाश्रमस्थाने हासोऽयं न प्रशस्यते।
अवगच्छामि ते शीलं परिहासप्रियं प्रिये॥

viśeṣeṇāśrama-sthāne hāso ’yaṁ na praśasyate
avagacchāmi te śīlaṁ parihāsa-priyaṁ priye

viśeṣeṇa = particularly; āśrama-sthāne = in an āśrama environment; hāsaḥ = joking; ayam = [but] such; na = not; praśasyate = is appreciated [by saintly authorities]; avagacchāmi = I understand that; te = you; śīlam = by nature; parihāsa-priyam = are fond of joking; priye = My beloved.

My beloved, I understand that by nature you are fond of joking. [But] such joking in an āśrama environment is particularly not appreciated [by saintly authorities].1

1 It is normal for young married couples to joke with each other. But residence in an āśrama environment demands that they restrain themselves in this regard. “An āśrama environment” is a temple with its adjoining residential facilities for brāhmaṇa households as well as residential facilities for brahmacārīs, vānaprasthas and sannyāsīs. It is also a fact that the holy dhāmas naturally constitute an āśrama environment.
