Chapter 63: Rāma’s Pain of Separation from Sītā
Text 3.62.1
स राजपुत्रः प्रियया विहीनः कामेन शोकेन च पीड्यमानः।
विषादयन्भ्रातरमार्तरूपो भूयो विषादं प्रविवेश तीव्रम्॥
sa rāja-putraḥ priyayā vihīnaḥ
kāmena śokena ca pīḍyamānaḥ
viṣādayan bhrātaram ārta-rūpo
bhūyo viṣādaṁ praviveśa tīvram
saḥ = He; rāja-putraḥ = Prince Rāma; priyayā = His beloved; vihīnaḥ = having lost; kāmena = by passion; śokena = sorrow; ca = and; pīḍyamānaḥ = was tormented; viṣādayan = which made dejected; bhrātaram = His brother; ārta-rūpaḥ = and His body was in pain; bhūyaḥ = again; viṣādam = into a state of dejection; praviveśa = entered; tīvram = intense.
Having lost His beloved, Prince Rāma entered into a state of intense dejection. He was tormented by passion and sorrow, and His body was in pain—which made His brother dejected.
In this chapter, Śrī Vālmīki reveals the pain [experienced by Lord Rāmacandra, the sixth] state of love [in separation from Śrī Sītā-devī].
His passion was aroused by His remembrance of His beloved and His sorrow was aroused because of His separation from her. He entered into a state of intense dejection, that is, He was in greater sorrow because of His sorrow and Lakṣmaṇa’s sorrow.
