Chapter 64: Rāma Discovers Some Clues About Sītā’s Whereabouts
Text 3.64.12
एषा गोदावरी सौम्य किञ्चिन्न प्रतिभाषते।
किंनु लक्ष्मण वक्ष्यामि समेत्य जनकं वचः।
मातरं चैव वैदेह्या विना तामहमप्रियम्॥
eṣā godāvarī saumya kiñcin na pratibhāṣate
kiṁ nu lakṣmaṇa vakṣyāmi sametya janakaṁ vacaḥ
mātaraṁ caiva vaidehyā vinā tām aham apriyam
eṣā = this; godāvarī = Godāvarī; saumya = gentle; kiñcit = at all; na pratibhāṣate = doesn’t reply; kim nu = what; lakṣmaṇa = Lakṣmaṇa; vakṣyāmi = should I speak; sametya = meet them; janakam = to the father; vacaḥ = words; mātaram = mother; ca eva = and; vaidehyāḥ = of Vaidehī; vinā = without; tām = her; aham = when I; apriyam = of distress.
Gentle Lakṣmaṇa, this Godāvarī doesn’t reply at all. What words of distress should I speak to the father and mother of Vaidehī when I meet them without her?
