मां प्राप्य हि गुणो दोषः संवृत्तः पश्य लक्ष्मण।
अद्यैव सर्वभूतानां रक्षसामभवाय च॥
संहृत्यैव शशिज्योत्स्नां महान्सूर्य इवोदितः।
संहृत्यैव गुणान्सर्वान्मम तेजः प्रकाशते॥
māṁ prāpya hi guṇo doṣaḥ saṁvṛttaḥ paśya lakṣmaṇa
adyaiva sarva-bhūtānāṁ rakṣasām abhavāya ca
saṁhṛtyaiva śaśi-jyotsnāṁ mahān sūrya ivoditaḥ
saṁhṛtyaiva guṇān sarvān mama tejaḥ prakāśate
mām = Me; prāpya hi = upon attaining; guṇaḥ = a good quality such as compassion; doṣaḥ = a bad quality; saṁvṛttaḥ = has turned out to be; paśya = just see; lakṣmaṇa = Lakṣmaṇa; adya eva = today; sarva-bhūtānām = [therefore] for the sake of all the creatures; rakṣasām = the rākṣasas; abhavāya = to annihilate; ca = and; saṁhṛtya eva = while destroying; śaśi-jyotsnām = the cooling moonlight; mahān = the great; sūryaḥ = sun; iva = like; uditaḥ = that arises; saṁhṛtya eva = while destroying; guṇān sarvān = My softness and all other good qualities; mama = My; tejaḥ = prowess; prakāśate = shall shine.
Lakṣmaṇa, just see! A good quality such as compassion has turned out to be a bad quality upon attaining Me.1 [Therefore,] for the sake of all the creatures and to annihilate the rākṣasas, today My prowess shall shine while destroying My softness and all other good qualities, like the great sun that arises while destroying the cooling moonlight.2

2 The annihilation of the rākṣasas is auspicious for them when the Supreme Lord takes up that task because the Supreme Lord benefits those whom He kills. See Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 2.1.40. Technical note: sarva-bhūtānām abhavāya cintā-nivṛttaye rakṣasām abhavāya ca.
“A good quality has become a bad quality” means “it has brought about the undesirable.” So what is the need of the good quality in the form of this bad quality when it brings about dishonor to the good person?
The Lord wanted to give up His compassion and become angry.
