Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 66: Lakṣmaṇa Pacifies Śrī Rāma
Text 3.66.10
या चेयं जगतां माता देवी लोकनमस्कृता।
अस्याश्च चलनं भूमेर्दृश्यते सत्यसंश्रव॥
yā ceyaṁ jagatāṁ mātā devī loka-namaskṛtā
asyāś ca calanaṁ bhūmer dṛśyate satya-saṁśrava
yā ca = and is; iyam = this earth; jagatām = of all; mātā = is the mother; devī = goddess; loka-namaskṛtā = respected by everyone; asyāḥ ca calanam bhūmeḥ = earthquakes; dṛśyate = [still] we experience; satya-saṁśrava = O one truthful to promises.
This goddess earth is the mother of all and is respected by everyone. [Still] we experience earthquakes, O one truthful to promises.
1 Everyone, that is, everyone civilized by Vedic standards.
Earth is the mother [of all the worlds] because she supplies the ingredients for all. She is referred to as the goddess because she is the wife of Lord Viṣṇu. Therefore, she is respected by everyone.1
“O one who is truthful to promises” implies that it was Lord Rāma who had instructed Lord Lakṣmaṇa in this manner.
