Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 66: Lakṣmaṇa Pacifies Śrī Rāma
Text 3.66.20
दिव्यं च मानुषं च त्वमात्मनश्च पराक्रमम्।
इक्ष्वाकुवृषभावेक्ष्य यतस्व द्विषतां वधे॥
divyaṁ ca mānuṣaṁ ca tvam ātmanaś ca parākramam
ikṣvāku-vṛṣabhāvekṣya yatasva dviṣatāṁ vadhe
divyam ca = those born in the celestial; mānuṣam ca = and human worlds; tvam1 ātmanaḥ = Your; ca = as well as; parākramam = strength; ikṣvāku-vṛṣabha = O leader of the Ikṣvākus; avekṣya = considering; yatasva = please only endeavor; dviṣatām = the inimical miscreants; vadhe = to kill.
O leader of the Ikṣvākus, considering those born in the celestial and human worlds as well as Your strength, please only endeavor to kill the inimical miscreants.
1 Technical note: tvam yatasva.
“Those born in the celestial worlds” are the devas, gandharvas and the like. They are in the mode of goodness [and hence] unfit to be killed. Brāhmaṇas and others born in the world of human beings are also unfit to be killed. “Your strength” refers to Lord Rāma’s ability to destroy all the worlds.
