ततः पूर्वेण तौ गत्वा त्रिक्रोशं भ्रातरौ तदा।
क्रौञ्चारण्यमतिक्रम्य मतङ्गाश्रममन्तरे॥
दृष्ट्वा तु तद्वनं घोरं बहुभीममृगद्विजम्।
नानासत्त्वसमाकीर्णं सर्वं गहनपादपम्॥
ददृशाते तु तौ तत्र दरीं दशरथात्मजौ।
पातालसमगम्भीरां तमसा नित्यसंवृताम्॥
tataḥ pūrveṇa tau gatvā tri-krośaṁ bhrātarau tadā
krauñcāraṇyam atikramya mataṅgāśramam antare
dṛṣṭvā tu tad vanaṁ ghoraṁ bahu-bhīma-mṛga-dvijam
nānā-sattva-samākīrṇaṁ sarvaṁ gahana-pādapam
dadṛśāte tu tau tatra darīṁ daśarathātmajau
pātāla-sama-gambhīrāṁ tamasā nitya-saṁvṛtām
tataḥ pūrveṇa = to the east of; tau = the two; gatvā = walked; tri-krośam = three krośas; bhrātarau = brothers; tadā = then; krauñcāraṇyam = Krauñcāraṇya; atikramya = after passing through; mataṅga-āśramam = the āśrama of Mataṅga [Muni]; antare = near [the āśrama]; dṛṣṭvā tu = and saw; tat = in that [forest]; vanam = a forest; ghoram = was terrible; bahu-bhīma-mṛga-dvijam = it was filled with many fierce beasts and birds; nānā-sattva-samākīrṇam = it was abound with various creatures; sarvam = everything; gahana-pādapam = and thick with trees; dadṛśāte tu = saw; tau = the two; tatra = in that forest; darīm = a cave; daśaratha-ātmajau = sons of Daśaratha; pātāla-sama-gambhīrām = it was as deep as Pātāla; tamasā = by darkness; nitya-saṁvṛtām = and always covered.
After passing through Krauñcāraṇya, the two brothers then walked three krośas to the east of the āśrama of Mataṅga [Muni] and saw a forest near [the āśrama]. Everything in that [forest] was terrible. It was filled with many fierce beasts and birds. It was abound with various creatures and thick with trees. The two sons of Daśaratha saw a cave in that [forest]. It was as deep as Pātāla and always covered by darkness.
