Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 69: Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa Meet Kabandha
Text 3.69.46

कृच्छ्रात्कृच्छ्रतरं प्राप्य दारुणं सत्यविक्रम।
व्यसनं जीवितान्ताय प्राप्तमप्राप्य तां प्रियाम्॥

kṛcchrāt kṛcchrataraṁ prāpya dāruṇaṁ satya-vikrama
vyasanaṁ jīvitāntāya prāptam aprāpya tāṁ priyām

kṛcchrāt = from a [minor] crisis; kṛcchrataram = to a major one; prāpya = after moving; dāruṇam = the terrible; satya-vikrama = O one of true prowess; vyasanam = distress; jīvita-antāya = of ending Our lives; prāptam = We have [now] come upon; aprāpya = without finding; tām = that; priyām = beloved [of Mine].

O one of true prowess, after moving from a [minor] crisis to a major one, We have [now] come upon the terrible distress of ending Our lives without finding that beloved [of Mine].

“After moving from a [minor] crisis to a major one” refers to Lord Rāma’s loss of kingdom and residence in the forest that culminated in the abduction of Sītā-devī.

He then described the cause of these [events].
