Chapter 71: Kabandha’s Past Life
Text 3.71.2

सोऽहं रूपमिदं कृत्वा लोकवित्रासनं महत्।
ऋषीन्वनगतान्राम त्रासयामि ततस्ततः॥

so ’haṁ rūpam idaṁ kṛtvā loka-vitrāsanaṁ mahat
ṛṣīn vana-gatān rāma trāsayāmi tatas tataḥ

saḥ = that beautiful form; aham = I; rūpam = form; idam = into this; kṛtvā = transformed; loka-vitrāsanam = that cruelly terrified the world; mahat = large; ṛṣīn = the sages; vana-gatān = who lived in the forests; rāma = Rāma; trāsayāmi = and frightened; tataḥ = here; tataḥ = and there.

Rāma, I transformed that beautiful form into this large form that cruelly terrified the world and frightened the sages who lived here and there in the forests.

GLOSS. Even though [Kabandha previously] had a beautiful form, he transformed himself through his glorious [power] into this form of a rākṣasa that terrified the world and frightened the sages.
