Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 71: Kabandha’s Past Life
Text 3.71.4
तेनाहमुक्तः प्रेक्ष्यैवं घोरशापाभिधायिना।
एतदेव नृशंसं ते रूपमस्तु विगर्हितम्॥
tenāham uktaḥ prekṣyaivaṁ ghora-śāpābhidhāyinā
etad eva nṛśaṁsaṁ te rūpam astu vigarhitam
tena = the sage; aham = me; uktaḥ = and spoke; prekṣya = saw; evam = [in] this [form]; ghora-śāpa-abhidhāyinā = [these] words containing a terrible curse; etat = this; eva = very; nṛśaṁsam = cruel; te = yours; rūpam = form; astu = may be; vigarhitam = and despised.
The sage saw me [in] this [form] and spoke [these] words containing a terrible curse: May this very cruel and despised form be yours!1
1 It appears that this curse was not put into effect immediately and that it became reality only through Indra.
