Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 71: Kabandha’s Past Life
Text 3.71.9

दीर्घमायुर्मया प्राप्तं किं मे शक्रः करिष्यति।
इत्येवं बुद्धिमास्थाय रणे शक्रमधर्षयम्॥

dīrgham āyur mayā prāptaṁ kiṁ me śakraḥ kariṣyati
ity evaṁ buddhim āsthāya raṇe śakram adharṣayam

dīrgham = a long; āyuḥ = life; mayā = I have; prāptam = attained; kim = what; me = to me; śakraḥ = Indra; kariṣyati = can do; iti evam buddhim āsthāya = I thought; raṇe = in battle; śakram = Indra; adharṣayam = and attacked.

I thought, “I have attained a long life. What can Indra do to me?” and attacked Indra in battle.

NOTE. This was certainly due to pride, a symptom of the demoniac nature, as described by Lord Kṛṣṇa in Bhagavad-gītā 16.10 thus:

kāmam āśritya duṣpūraṁ dambha-māna-madānvitāḥ
mohād gṛhītvāsad-grāhān pravartante ’śuci-vratāḥ

“Taking shelter of insatiable lust and absorbed in the conceit of pride and false prestige, the demoniac, thus illusioned, are always sworn to unclean work, attracted by the impermanent.”
