Chapter 74: Lord Rāma Visits Śabarī
Text 3.74.23
इयं प्रत्यक्स्थली वेदिर्यत्र ते मे सुसत्कृताः।
पुष्पोपहारं कुर्वन्ति श्रमादुद्वेपिभिः करैः॥
iyaṁ pratyak-sthalī vedir yatra te me susatkṛtāḥ
puṣpopahāraṁ kurvanti śramād udvepibhiḥ karaiḥ
iyam = here; pratyak-sthalī = sloping to the west; vediḥ = are altars; yatra = here; te = those; me = of mine; susatkṛtāḥ = masters whom I greatly revere; puṣpa-upahāram = flowers; kurvanti = offered; śramāt = due to exhaustion; udvepibhiḥ = shaking; karaiḥ = with hands.
Here are altars sloping to the west. With hands shaking due to exhaustion, those masters whom I greatly revere offered flowers here.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: atra vedir iti jāty-eka-vacanam uttara-śloke bahu-vacana-prayogāt bahūnāṁ bahu-vedi-sambhavāc ca.
[The altars] were meant for Lord Viṣṇu.
“Here are altars sloping to the west” indicates that she intended to tell Him, “Look at these [altars]!”
Because of old age [and] their inability to hold the flowers, her ācāryas’ hands shook with exhaustion [when] they worshipped [the Supreme Lord] with flowers. [Though] vediḥ [is in the singular, it] refers to many altars because the next verse refers to vedyaḥ (“altars”) in the plural.1
