Chapter 23: The History of Kāmāśrama
Text 1.23.11

तपस्यन्तमिह स्थाणुं नियमेन समाहितम्।
कृतोद्वाहं तु देवेशं गच्छन्तं समरुद्गणम्।
धर्षयामास दुर्मेधा हुङ्कृतश्च महात्मना॥

tapasyantam iha sthāṇuṁ niyamena samāhitam
kṛtodvāhaṁ
tu deveśaṁ gacchantaṁ samarud-gaṇam
dharṣayām
āsa durmedhā huṅkṛtaś ca mahātmanā

tapasyantam = when Rudra was engaged in austerities; iha = here; sthāṇum = Lord Rudra; niyamena = according to scriptural rules and regulations; samāhitam = absorbed in his meditation; kṛta-udvāham tu = was married to Pārvatī; deva-īśam = Rudra, the Lord of the devas; gacchantam = and was going to her; samarut-gaṇam = with the Maruts; dharṣayām āsa = aggressively attacked; durmedhāḥ = the foolish Kāma; huṅkṛtaḥ ca = roared back; mahā-ātmanā = [when attacked,] that great soul.

The foolish Kāma aggressively attacked Lord Rudra with the Maruts when Rudra was engaged in austerities here according to scriptural rules and regulations, absorbed in his meditation. Rudra, the Lord of the devas, was married to Pārvatī and was going to her. [When attacked,] that great soul roared back.
