Chapter 43: Gaṅgā Descends to the Earth
Text 1.43.40
ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वा ऋषयश्च सुविस्मिताः।
पूजयन्ति महात्मानं जह्नुं पुरुषसत्तमम्।
गङ्गां चापि नयन्ति स्म दुहितृत्वे महात्मनः॥
tato devāḥ sagandharvā ṛṣayaś ca suvismitāḥ
pūjayanti mahātmānaṁ jahnuṁ puruṣa-sattamam
gaṅgāṁ cāpi nayanti sma duhitṛtve mahātmanaḥ
tataḥ devāḥ = the devas; sa-gandharvāḥ = gandharvas; ṛṣayaḥ ca = ṛṣis; suvismitāḥ = very surprised and; pūjayanti = worshipped; mahā-ātmānam = the great soul; jahnum = Jahnu Muni; puruṣa-sattamam = the very best of men; gaṅgām = Gaṅgā; ca api = and; nayanti sma = declared; duhitṛtve = the daughter; mahā-ātmanaḥ = of that great soul.
Very surprised, the devas, gandharvas and ṛṣis worshipped the very best of men, the great soul Jahnu Muni, and declared
Gaṅgā the daughter of that great soul.
