Chapter 9: Kaikeyī Convinced by Mantharā
Text 2.9.28
यौ तौ दैवासुरे युद्धे वरौ दशरथोऽददात्।
तौ स्मारय महाभागे सोऽर्थो मा त्वामतिक्रमेत्॥
yau tau daivāsure yuddhe varau daśaratho ’dadāt
tau smāraya mahā-bhāge so ’rtho mā tvām atikramet
yau tau = that; daiva-asure = between the devas and asuras; yuddhe = during the war; varau = boons; daśarathaḥ = Daśaratha; adadāt = had given you; tau = of the two very famous; smāraya = remind him; mahā-bhāge = O greatly fortunate one; saḥ arthaḥ = of your objective; mā tvām = don’t; atikramet = lose sight.
O greatly fortune one, remind him of the two very famous boons that Daśaratha had given you during the war between the devas and asuras. Don’t lose sight of your objective.
“Remind him of the two very famous boons” means “remind him to grant you the two very famous boons.” Mantharā wanted Kaikeyī to not lose sight of her objective—Rāma’s exile and Bharata’s coronation—for if King Daśaratha grants her those two boons now, everything she wants can be achieved because the king was truthful to his promises.
