Chapter 9: Kaikeyī Convinced by Mantharā
Text 2.9.33
एवं प्रव्राजितश्चैव रामोऽरामो भविष्यति।
भरतश्च हतामित्रस्तव राजा भविष्यति॥
evaṁ pravrājitaś caiva rāmo ’rāmo bhaviṣyati
bharataś ca hatāmitras tava rājā bhaviṣyati
evam = thus; pravrājitaḥ ca eva = exiled; rāmaḥ = Rāma; arāmaḥ = displeasing; bhaviṣyati = will become; bharataḥ = Bharata; ca = and; hata-amitraḥ = after neutralizing enemies; tava = your; rājā = the king; bhaviṣyati = will become.
Exiled thus, Rāma will become displeasing, and your Bharata will become the king after neutralizing your enemies.
1 She didn’t imagine that the citizens loved Rāma over and beyond everything else and that Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā-devī would accompany Him to the forest.
Mantharā thinks that when Rāma is thus exiled, He will immediately cease to become an object of His citizens’ affection. Rāmo’rāmo bhaviṣyati can also be read as rāmo rāmo bhaviṣyati which indicates that Mantharā thought that Rāma would be alone, [bereft of everyone’s association and the love of His citizens].1
