Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 9: Kaikeyī Convinced by Mantharā
Text 2.9.48
जात्येन च सुवर्णेन सुनिष्टप्तेन मन्थरे।
लब्धार्था च प्रतीता च लेपयिष्यामि ते स्थगु॥
jātyena ca suvarṇena suniṣṭaptena manthare
labdhārthā ca pratītā ca lepayiṣyāmi te sthagu
jātyena ca = pure; suvarṇena = gold; suniṣṭaptena = with well-molten; manthare = Mantharā; labdha-arthā ca = when my purposes are achieved; pratītā = I am satisfied; ca = and; lepayiṣyāmi = I will cover; te = your; sthagu = hump.
Mantharā, when my purposes are achieved and I am satisfied, I will cover your hump with well-molten pure gold.
मुखे च तिलकं चित्रं जातरूपमयं शुभम्।
कारयिष्यामि ते कुब्जे शुभान्याभरणानि च॥
[If Kaikeyī’s purposes were achieved, she wanted to] cover Mantharā’s hump with gold, that is, decorate it with a golden cloth or smear sandal pulp mixed with gold on it.
