Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 11: Kaikeyī Demands two Boons
Text 2.11.11
सा तदर्थमना देवी तमभिप्रायमागतम्।
निर्माध्यस्थ्याच्च हर्षाच्च बभाषे दुस्सहं वचः॥
sā tad-artha-manā devī tam abhiprāyam āgatam
nirmādhyasthyāc ca harṣāc ca babhāṣe duḥsahaṁ vacaḥ
sā = the; tat-artha-manāḥ = with her purposes in mind; devī = queen; tam abhiprāyam āgatam = now that her husband had promised to do as she desired; nirmādhyasthyāt ca = out of partiality; harṣāt = delight; ca = and; babhāṣe = [then] spoke; duḥsaham = the following intolerable; vacaḥ = words.
Now that her husband had promised to do as she desired, with her purposes in mind, the queen [then] spoke the following intolerable words out of partiality and delight.
Kaikeyī had her purposes in mind—Rāma should be banished and Bharata should be coronated—as Mantharā had instructed. Kaikeyī was no longer impartial [towards Bharata and Rāma]—she was partial [to Bharata].
